Student
Leadership

Mitcham Girls High School prides itself on encouraging confidence and leadership in young women. Through such events as International Women’s Day, we showcase the incredible contributions of female leaders around the world and provide the girls with positive role models from all areas of life. We teach our students that they can work alongside men as leaders in any field of their choosing. There are many opportunities throughout the school for girls to take on leadership roles. These roles are both formal and informal, with some of our most successful programs including the Student Representative Council (SRC), Peer Leaders, Maths Leaders and House Captains.

Student Representative Council (SRC)

An active Student Representative Council (SRC) operates within the school. Office bearers are elected from both the Middle and Senior School. Priorities for action are established each year. Student representatives contribute to a range of school committees, including the Governing Council.

Fundraising by the SRC is conducted throughout the year. Funds raised are used to improve student facilities at the school and to support nominated charities.

House Captains

Mitcham Girls High qq体育直播s belong to one of three houses, which form the basis for competition in athletics, swimming and other events. Each house has a team of Captains, one from each year level, who have been elected by their peers. These House Captains take a leadership role as they manage their house teams during Sports Day, Swimming Carnival and lunchtime House Sports competitions. At the end of the year the house with the most points is presented with the Collyer Cup. The three Houses are:

Youth Opportunities: Personal Leadership Program

Our face-to-face Personal Leadership Program is delivered in partnership with schools one day per week over 10 weeks and rewards students with 20 SACE points on successful completion. The program provides young people with the enterprise skills they need for future education and employment success, along with tools to increase confidence, self-worth, and motivation, helping them to build the optimism and resilience to overcome adversity throughout their lives.

Maths Leaders

The Maths Leaders program is designed to allow girls who are gifted in the area of Mathematics to develop their leadership and mentoring skills. At the same time, the program is of invaluable assistance to girls who need extra assistance in this area.

Every lunch time there is Maths and Science tutoring available for students who would like to take advantage of the opportunity. This tutoring is carried out and supervised by Maths and Science teachers. However, in order to give each student a greater level of one-to-one attention, the Maths Leaders work as assistant tutors.
Senior students voluntarily give up one lunch time a week to assist the younger students who need that extra individual attention. Mitcham Girls High Schools congratulates the Maths Leaders, who volunteer their time to help others and share their love of Mathematics.

Peer Leadership Program

This program supports and ensures the development of:
  • Leadership skills
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Reflective practice
  • Personal growth
  • Community service
Enrolment is subject to a selection process including a written application and the completion of Peer Leader Training.听 Peer Leaders commit to supporting the transition of Year 7 students to high school and demonstrate leadership by:
  • Attending and supporting Transition/Orientation Days, Primary School visits, Year 7 Camp (subject to numbers)
  • Regularly attending Year 7 LEAP and facilitating activities and sessions
  • Collaborating with peers, Year 7 students, Mentor Teacher, Year 7 LEAP teachers, and Learning Engagement Leaders

The Year 10 and 11 students are present in many of the Year 7 and 8 Care Group programs to support teachers and to organise activities. This program encourages leadership and a culture of trust and acceptance. The Leaders also support the annual three-day Year 7 Camp.

Peer Leaders take part in an intensive training program where they develop skills to assist them in delivering workshops and assisting students with issues. Their leadership training is ongoing for the first Semester. Once the structured, formal in-class support comes to a close, the leaders will have established strong relationships with many of the Year 7s and 8s and will continue to be available to support and mentor them in many different ways.

The program supports many of our school goals, in particular, giving girls opportunities to develop confidence, resilience, wellbeing, independence, civic responsibility and leadership skills.

Zonta leadership Program

Zonta is dedicated to achieving gender equality in education and supports scholarships, fellowships and awards for women and girls pursuing education and careers in these traditionally male-dominated fields.

Students in Year 10 will be provided the opportunity to engage in the Zonta leadership program.
